How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign®

First, an impression of your teeth is taken so that a series of aligners can be made in a dental lab. The aligners themselves are made of a thermoplastic material that is strong yet flexible to be comfortable for extended wear. The material is virtually invisible.

The aligners should be worn 22 hours a day and must be replaced every once a week with the next splint in the series. Over a period of several months, the aligners will slowly move your teeth into the correct position by making a small adjustment for specific teeth at a time. This helps keep your teeth comfortable as they are moved into position at a manageable pace.

Some patients need to wear attachments to make sure their teeth move perfectly into place. An attachment is a clear bump made of an enamel-colored composite that attaches to your teeth. The cusps on your aligners grip them to hold the aligner in place. This may be necessary in more complicated cases to ensure that a particular tooth or teeth slip into place. Depending on the complexity of your case, you could complete your treatment in as little as 6 months, but you’ll start seeing results in a matter of weeks.

Invisalign®

Here at our office, we will schedule your check-ups every few weeks to check your progress and pick up the next batch of aligners.

Advantages of Invisalign

  • It is very comfortable compared to traditional braces.
  • The aligners are clear, so no one can see that you are straightening your teeth.
  • They are worn for only 22 hours a day, so you can take them out to dinner, go on a date, or give an important presentation at work.
  • You can brush and floss your teeth as usual, and no additional tools are required.
  • The risk of discoloring your teeth is less than with metal braces, which are difficult to clean.
  • The procedure is more comfortable than metal braces because the aligners move the teeth into position slowly, focusing on only a few teeth at a time.
  • Aligners are trimmed along your gum line for optimal comfort and aesthetics

How do I care for my aligners?

We recommend that our patients take out their aligners daily and rinse them with warm water. You can also brush them off with a soft toothbrush
